World Celebrities Talk About Expo (Thirty-Seven)

World Expo

Ding Yihui, academician of the Chinese Academy of engineering, National Climate Center of the China Meteorological Administration, chairman of the East Asian monsoon Research Committee of the World Meteorological Organization and special adviser on climate change of the China Meteorological Administration.

A comprehensive business system for monitoring, forecasting, evaluating and serving China has been established. During the period of the executive director of the first working group of the Intergovernmental Panel on climate change (IPCC) and the joint scientific committee of the world climate research program (WCRP), many important research achievements have been made in climate change, the Asian monsoon and China's disastrous weather.

World Expo, Shanghai, held in 2010 is another great event for China to face the world after the Beijing Olympic Games. As a Shanghai person working in Beijing, I have deep wishes for the world event hosted in my hometown. Because of my research on climate and climate change, some friends hope that I will make some suggestions on Shanghai World Expo with the example of the Olympic air defense in Beijing.

As we all know, World Expo is much longer than the Olympic Games, and its meteorological services are much more difficult than the Olympic Games.

The most important part of the Olympic Games is the opening and closing ceremonies. The World Expo meteorological forecast for half a year should not only make a trend forecast, but also report the weather and climate forecasts for different periods of the month, week, day, and even one day, so that various activities can be arranged more reasonably and effectively.

I believe the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau has this ability. Shanghai has first-class forecasters and scientists working, and our Beijing counterparts will also provide backup.

{page_break} but on this topic, what I want to say most is that the process of hosting World Expo is actually a rare opportunity for Chinese people to establish a sense of climate protection, which is just as important as protecting the environment.

We can use this platform to publicize the importance of protecting the climate and protecting the environment for the citizens of Shanghai.

I know that World Expo, Shanghai is preparing a meteorological Museum, which is also an important aspect.

For the Shanghai city that I grew up and studied from childhood, what I most want to talk about is to establish the consciousness of climate protection.

In the past 30 years, China's economic construction has been developing rapidly.

Urbanization has made an important contribution to China's GDP growth. According to statistics in 2006, only the total number of GDP in the top 50 cities has accounted for 60% of the whole country. However, some meteorological disasters have also been generated, which has brought serious impacts on the urban environment and ecosystem, most of which are negative.

For Shanghai, a super city, it is no exception.

The change of climate caused by urbanization is mainly manifested in the following aspects: (1) the risk of urban flood or waterlogging is increasing.

This is due to the expansion of urban scale and the strong development of strong convective weather caused by the strengthening of urban heat island effect.

On the other hand, large areas of drought caused by climate change will also cause more serious waves to the cities with large demand for water supply, exacerbating the already serious water shortage phenomenon. (2) high temperature heat waves.

Due to climate warming, the high temperature and heat wave disasters in cities are becoming more and more serious. Not only will there be frequent abnormal high temperatures, but also record high temperatures.

(3) low temperature, freezing rain and ice and snow.

(4) gale.

Because of the dense buildings in the city, the narrow tube effect often results in the local wind speed increasing.

On the other hand, due to the invasion of the weather system, it will further increase the wind speed of the city and cause serious disasters to people and buildings.

(5) heat island effect.

According to the latest statistics from the China Meteorological Administration, the average heat island effect in the whole country accounts for about 1/4 of the total temperature caused by climate warming. This is a considerable increase in temperature.

In addition, the dry island or wet Island, turbid island and Rain Island caused by urbanization were also found.

Moreover, the so-called five island effect of the city is interrelated to a large extent, and their interaction with the changing weather and climatic conditions increasingly affects the climate and environmental conditions of the city. (6) the climatic effects of atmospheric aerosols.

The impact of atmospheric aerosols on the city includes many aspects, first of all, air pollution. It mainly endangers the health of the crowd. Secondly, it reduces the visibility of the city, and increases the frequency of haze days (visibility <10 km), which seriously affects the urban surface and air traffic, and causes a variety of accidents.

The above six weather and climate phenomena are the main meteorological phenomena caused by urbanization in China.

In order to build a people-oriented low carbon city, we should take these problems into consideration in future urban planning, and take targeted measures to build a new type of city with excellent living environment, perfect system of disaster prevention and mitigation, and harmonious development of ecosystem and environment with urban development.

In 2010, World Expo and Shanghai took the theme of city and human life for the first time. If World Expo can become an opportunity to effectively enhance the general public's climate awareness, it will leave an indelible "Shanghai memory" in World Expo's history.
